Overweight

Overweight is a condition in which a person has more body weight than what is considered healthy for their height. It usually occurs when the body accumulates excess fat due to an imbalance between calorie intake and physical activity. Overweight is commonly assessed using the Body Mass Index (BMI), where a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is classified as overweight. Although it may not be as severe as obesity, being overweight can still increase the risk of several health problems.

Common causes of overweight include unhealthy eating habits, excessive consumption of high-calorie processed foods, lack of regular exercise, poor sleep, hormonal imbalances, stress, and genetic factors. Modern lifestyles with sedentary work and limited physical activity also contribute significantly to weight gain.

People who are overweight may experience symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness during physical activity, joint pain, and reduced stamina. If left unmanaged, it can increase the risk of chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, fatty liver disease, and metabolic syndrome.

Managing overweight involves adopting healthier lifestyle habits. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, along with regular physical activity, plays a key role in weight control. Adequate sleep, stress management, and limiting sugary or processed foods are also important. In some cases, medical guidance from healthcare professionals or dietitians can help individuals develop a safe and effective weight management plan.
