Kaphaja Kasa (Chronic Cough)

Kaphaja Kasa is an Ayurvedic subtype of chronic cough produced by vitiated Kapha dosha accumulating in the chest and respiratory channels. It manifests as a persistent, mucus?producing cough with thick, white or cloudy sputum, heavy or congested chest, clogged nose, mild to moderate body heaviness, and often a sweet or sticky taste in the mouth without significant chest pain.

Pathology and triggers

Kapha aggravation in the Pranavaha Srotas obstructs airflow and causes frequent expectoration as the body attempts to expel accumulated phlegm. Contributing factors include cold?damp environment, heavy or oily foods, dairy excess, irregular sleep, smoking, and recurrent upper?respiratory infections that prolong the cough.

Ayurvedic management

Treatment focuses on Kapha?pacifying measures such as Nidana parivarjana (avoiding causative factors), Vamana?based Shodhana in eligible patients, and Shamana medicines like warm, expectorant decoctions (e.g., Dashamula Kwatha with Pippali), Sitopaladi Churna, and selected bhasmas. Dietary lightness, steam inhalation, and Pranayama further help clear sputum and reduce recurrence.
