Balashosha (Malnutrition)

Balashosha in Ayurveda refers to a condition of malnutrition in children, characterized by weakness, poor growth, and tissue depletion. It primarily occurs due to inadequate or improper nutrition, poor digestion (Mandagni), recurrent infections, and early cessation of breastfeeding. The imbalance of Vata and Pitta dosha plays a key role in the depletion of body tissues, leading to dryness, weight loss, fatigue, and (low immunity).

Common symptoms include emaciation, dry skin, hair fall), irritability, delayed milestones, and lack of energy. If untreated, it may affect both physical and mental development of the child.

Ayurvedic management focuses on nourishing and strengthening the body through balanced diet (Brimhana Chikitsa) and improving digestion. Therapies include use of medicated ghee, milk, and herbal formulations like Ashwagandha and Shatavari. Emphasis is also placed on proper breastfeeding, hygienic practices, and timely introduction of nutrient-rich foods.

With holistic care and proper nutrition, Balashosha can be effectively managed, ensuring healthy growth and development in children.
