Vandhyatva (Infertility)

Vandhyatva, or infertility, refers to the inability of a couple to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse, despite having normal reproductive desire and function. In Ayurveda it is seen as a disorder of the reproductive dhatu (sukra in men, artava in women), caused by vitiation of doshas (especially Vata), impaired agni, and blockage or vitiation of srotas (reproductive channels). Contributing factors include Sukra?dosha, Artava?kshaya, hormonal imbalance, anovulatory cycles, tubal?peritoneal pathology, stress, and unhealthy lifestyle.

Ayurvedic perspective

Ayurveda classifies Vandhyatva among Vatavyadhi?related yoni?rogas and links it to Avayava?dushti (structural defects), Beejodosha, and Vata?prakopa in the reproductive system. Treatment aims to strengthen the body (Balya), nourish reproductive tissues (Brumhana?Rasayana), and enhance fertility potency (Vrishya?Vajeekarana).

Integrative management

Management includes Shodhana (purgation, medicated enema, Uttar?basti), Shamana (medicated ghees, herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavari), diet correction, yoga, and stress?reduction to restore dosha?dhatu?agni balance and improve conception potential.
