Artava Dushti (Menstrual Disorders)

In Ayurveda, 'Artava Dushti' refers to problems or imbalances in the menstrual blood ('Artava') that cause different monthly problems. The main cause is the imbalance of the three doshasVata, Pitta, and Kapha—which prevents the reproductive system from working properly. Some typical causes are a bad diet, stress, hormonal imbalance, inactivity, and resisting natural cravings.

Symptoms of Artava Dushti may include irregular menstruation, excessive or scanty bleeding, painful periods (dysmenorrhoea), clots, foul odour, and mood disturbances. An imbalance in Vata can cause cycles to be late or uncomfortable, while an imbalance in Pitta can bring copious bleeding with burning sensations. An imbalance in Kapha can induce sluggish flow and heaviness.

Ayurvedic management aims to restore doshic balance by food regulation, lifestyle modification, and herbal treatments. People often utilise herbs like Ashoka, Lodhra, Shatavari, and Dashmool to help their menstrual periods and improve their uterine health. For detoxification, Panchakarma therapies, especially Virechana and Basti, may also be suggested.

To avoid Artava Dushti, it's essential to eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep, handle stress, and exercise regularly. Early diagnosis and whole-person care can help restore reproductive health and general health.
