Manasik Avsaad (Depression)

Manasik Avsaad, commonly known as depression, is an Ayurvedic “manas vikaara” (mental disorder) characterized by persistent sadness, low motivation, fatigue, poor concentration, and loss of interest in daily activities. It arises from imbalance of the three doshas (especially Vata and Kapha) along with increased Rajas and Tamas gunas, which weaken “mano bala” (mental strength) and disturb perception, memory, and behavior.

Ayurvedic understanding

Ayurveda classifies such conditions as Vishada or Avasada, where the mind “sinks” or droops, producing hopelessness, self blame, and social withdrawal. Chronic stress, unhealthy diet, irregular lifestyle, and emotional trauma are considered key triggers.

Integrative management

Treatment includes “Yuktivyapashraya” (diet and medicines), “Satvavajaya” (psycho counselling, yoga, meditation), and Panchakarma like interventions such as snehapana, swedana, shirodhara, and marma therapies to pacify aggravated doshas and calm the mind.
