Unmada (Psychosis)

Unmada encompasses psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, marked by deranged Manas (mind), Buddhi (intellect), and Indriyas due to vitiated Vata, Pitta, or Kapha doshas alongside Rajas-Tamas guna aggravation. Classified into endogenous (Nija, doshic) and exogenous (Agantuja, trauma-induced) types, plus subtypes like Vataja (anxiety, insomnia), Pittaja (anger, hallucinations), and Kaphaja (depression, lethargy). Ama and incompatible foods disrupt Mana-vaha Srotas, leading to cognitive chaos.

Causes and Symptoms

Etiology includes Viruddha Ahara (contradictory foods), stress, insults, and improper lifestyle, vitiating doshas and clouding Satva. Symptoms feature abnormal speech/actions, delusions, aggression, memory loss, seizures, and mania; Vataja shows emaciation and fear, Pittaja burning sensations, Kaphaja heaviness.

Ayurvedic Management

Treatment integrates Yukti-vyapashraya (medication), Daiva-vyapashraya (spiritual), and Sattvavajaya (psychotherapy via reassurance, counseling). Shodhana employs Virechana (purgation), Nasya, Basti for detoxification; Shamana uses Brahmi Ghrita, Jatamansi for calming. Massage, Shirodhara, and behavioral modulation restore equilibrium, reducing PANSS scores effectively as seen in cases.
