Sandhigata Vata (Degenerative Joint Disease)

In Ayurveda, Sandhigata Vata refers to a degenerative joint disorder, closely resembling osteoarthritis. It is primarily caused by the aggravation of Vata dosha, which leads to depletion of joint lubrication (Shleshaka Kapha) and gradual wear and tear of cartilage. This results in dryness, roughness, and degeneration within the joints (Sandhi), affecting mobility and flexibility.

The condition commonly occurs due to ageing, excessive physical activity, injury, poor nutrition, and lifestyle factors that aggravate Vata, such as irregular routines and exposure to cold environments. Weak digestion (Agni Mandya) and tissue depletion (Dhatu Kshaya) further contribute to joint degeneration.

Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, crepitus (cracking sounds), and reduced range of motion. The pain often worsens with movement and improves with rest. Weight-bearing joints like knees, hips, and spine are most commonly affected.

Ayurvedic management focuses on pacifying Vata and nourishing joint tissues. Shodhana therapies like Basti (medicated enema) are highly effective. Shamana treatments include herbal formulations such as Ashwagandha, Guggulu, Shallaki, and Dashmool. A balanced diet, regular gentle exercise, and proper lifestyle practices are essential for long-term joint health.
