Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis)

In Ayurveda, Amavata is a chronic inflammatory disorder that closely resembles rheumatoid arthritis. It is primarily caused by the accumulation of Ama (toxins formed due to impaired digestion) combined with the aggravation of Vata dosha. This toxic material circulates through the body and gets deposited in the joints (Sandhi), leading to inflammation, pain, and stiffness.

The root cause of Amavata lies in Mandagni (weak digestive fire), which results in incomplete digestion and the formation of Ama. Factors such as an unhealthy diet, incompatible foods, sedentary lifestyle, excessive physical exertion, and exposure to cold or damp environments further aggravate the condition.

Symptoms include severe joint pain, swelling, stiffness (especially in the morning), heaviness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and restricted movement. Unlike other joint disorders, Amavata often affects multiple joints symmetrically and may also involve systemic features like fever and weakness.

Ayurvedic management focuses on eliminating Ama and balancing Vata through Shodhana therapies like Virechana and Basti. Initial treatment emphasizes Langhana (lightening therapy) and Deepana-Pachana to improve digestion. Herbal remedies such as Guggulu, Shallaki, Rasna, and Ginger are commonly used. A light, warm diet and regular lifestyle practices are essential for long-term management.
