Palitya (Premature Greying)

In Ayurveda, Palitya refers to the premature greying of hair, primarily caused by the aggravation of Pitta dosha. Pitta governs heat and metabolic activities in the body, and when it becomes imbalanced, it affects the pigmentation process of hair, leading to early loss of natural color. Vata may also contribute by causing dryness and weakening of hair roots, accelerating the greying process.

The main causes of Palitya include excessive intake of spicy, sour, and salty foods, mental stress, anger, irregular lifestyle, lack of proper sleep, and genetic predisposition. Poor nutrition and impaired digestion (Agni Dushti) result in inadequate nourishment of hair tissues (Asthi and Majja Dhatu), further contributing to pigment loss.

Symptoms include early appearance of grey or white hair, dryness, rough texture, and reduced hair strength. Unlike natural ageing, Palitya occurs at a younger age and may progress rapidly if not managed properly.

Ayurvedic management focuses on balancing Pitta through Shodhana therapies like Virechana and nourishing treatments (Rasayana). Herbs such as Amla, Bhringraj, Brahmi, and Curry Leaves are commonly used to restore pigmentation and strengthen hair. Regular oil massage (Shiro Abhyanga), stress reduction, and a balanced diet rich in antioxidants play a key role in prevention and management.
