Khalitya (Hair Loss)

In Ayurveda, Khalitya refers to hair loss or baldness, classified under Shiro Roga (diseases of the head). It primarily results from the imbalance of Pitta dosha, often associated with Vata, which affects the hair roots (Kesha Moola) and leads to gradual thinning and falling of hair. Pitta aggravation generates excessive heat in the scalp, damaging hair follicles, while Vata contributes to dryness and nourishment, accelerating hair fall.

The main causes of Khalitya include improper diet, excessive intake of spicy, oily, and processed foods, stress, irregular sleep patterns, hormonal imbalance, and genetic predisposition. Poor digestion (Mandagni) and toxin accumulation (Ama) further weaken hair health by disrupting proper tissue nourishment (Dhatu Poshana).

Symptoms include excessive hair fall, thinning of hair, receding hairline, dryness of scalp, and in advanced stages, partial or complete baldness. Ayurveda emphasizes early intervention to prevent irreversible follicle damage.

Treatment focuses on balancing doshas through Shodhana therapies like Virechana, along with Shamana treatments such as herbal oils and formulations. Commonly used herbs include Bhringraj, Amla, Brahmi, and Neem, known for promoting hair growth and strengthening roots. Regular oil massage (Shiro Abhyanga), stress management, and a nutritious diet rich in proteins and minerals support long-term hair health.
