Ayurveda
describes Shwitra as a sort of Kushtha (skin ailment) that causes the
skin to lose its natural colour, which is quite similar to what contemporary
medicine calls 'vitiligo'. It mainly has to do with the vitiation of all
three doshas, although Pitta is the most affected. It also affects Rakta
(blood) and Bhrajaka Pitta, which controls skin colour. The illness causes
white or depigmented spots to show up on different regions of the body.
Some of the things that
cause this are eating foods that don't go together (Viruddha Ahara),
eating too many sour, salty, and fermented foods, holding back natural desires,
and having bad digestion that leads to toxin (Ama) buildup. Genetic
predisposition and emotional stress may also play a role.
Shwitra symptoms
include well-defined white spots, dryness, and discolouration that spreads
slowly without causing any itching or pain. Ayurveda stresses finding
and treating problems early to stop them from getting worse.
Management emphasises Shodhana
(purification therapies) such as Virechana and Raktamokshana,
succeeded by Shamana treatment with herbs like Bakuchi, Neem, and
Khadira. People typically suggest using topical treatments and limited sun
exposure to boost pigmentation. A controlled diet and lifestyle, along
with avoiding incompatible items, are very important for effective management.
