Galaganda (Thyroid Swelling)

Galaganda refers to abnormal swelling in the neck region, primarily due to thyroid gland enlargement, akin to goiter in modern medicine. Ayurveda attributes it to vitiated Kapha dosha mixing with Meda dhatu, often involving Vata, leading to Srotorodha (channel obstruction) in the Galapradesha (neck area). Classified into Vataja (painful, dry), Kaphaja (cold, large), and Medaja (unctuous, foul-smelling) types, it disrupts metabolism and Agni.

Early stages are curable; advanced cases with deep roots prove challenging.?

Causes and Symptoms

Etiology includes Kapha-aggravating diets (heavy, sweet foods), iodine deficiency, weak digestion producing Ama, and lifestyle factors like stress. Symptoms encompass visible/palpable neck swelling, hoarseness, cough, dyspnea, dysphagia, fatigue, weight changes, and cold intolerance.

Ayurvedic Management

Treatment follows Lekhana (scraping) and Shodhana principles: Nidanaparivarjana (avoid cold, oily foods), Pathya (iodine-rich greens, barley), and Panchakarma like Virechana, Nasya, and Viddha Karma (therapeutic piercing). Herbs such as Kanchnar Guggulu, Varunadi Kwath, and Triphala reduce swelling and balance doshas. Yoga and Pranayama support thyroid function long-term.
