Pandu (Anemia)

Pandu is a classical Ayurvedic condition characterized by pallor of the skin, weakness, fatigue, and reduced vitality, closely resembling anemia in modern medicine. It primarily arises due to imbalance of Pitta dosha along with involvement of Vata and Kapha, leading to improper formation and depletion of Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue). Factors such as poor nutrition, excessive intake of sour, salty, or alkaline foods, chronic illnesses, stress, and digestive impairment (Mandagni) contribute to its development.

Patients with Pandu often present with symptoms like pale complexion, dizziness, breathlessness on exertion, low appetite, fatigue, and sometimes swelling around the eyes or feet. Ayurveda emphasizes the role of impaired digestion and metabolism in its pathogenesis, where the body fails to properly nourish blood tissue.

Management focuses on correcting digestion, balancing doshas, and nourishing the body. Herbal formulations like Lauha preparations, Punarnava, and Amalaki are commonly used. Dietary recommendations include iron-rich and easily digestible foods such as green leafy vegetables, pomegranate, jaggery, and lentils. Lifestyle modifications, including adequate rest and stress management, are also essential.

With a holistic approach combining diet, herbs, and lifestyle, Ayurveda aims not only to treat symptoms but also to restore overall strength and vitality.
