Sthaulya (Obesity)

Sthaulya, as described in Ayurveda, is the excessive buildup of bodily fat caused by an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, as well as impeded digestion (Mandagni). It is characterised by elevated body weight, lethargy, excessive sweating, dyspnoea upon exertion, and reduced physical activity. A sedentary lifestyle; overeating; frequent consumption of heavy, greasy, and sweet meals; as well as a lack of exercise, are all key contributors.

In Sthaulya, the metabolic system slows, resulting in poor digestion and the development of Ama (toxins) that collect in fatty tissues (Meda Dhatu). This condition impairs normal physiological activities and raises the risk of related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and joint difficulties. Sthaulya is considered by Ayurveda to be a systemic imbalance that affects overall health rather than a physical disease.

Management aims to restore digestive fire, reduce extra fat, and balance doshas with a combination of dietary changes, herbal medicines, detoxification therapies, and regular exercise. Herbs like Triphala, Guggulu, and Musta are frequently prescribed. Yoga, fasting (Langhana), and being active are all important lifestyle habits for long-term weight management.
