Madhumeha (Diabetes Mellitus)

Madhumeha is a chronic metabolic illness described in Ayurveda as a subset of Prameha, characterised by a Kapha dosha imbalance and, eventually, Vata involvement. It is distinguished by excessive urination, pleasant urine, weariness, thirst, and gradual depletion of body tissues. Improper diet, sedentary lifestyle, excessive intake of sugary and heavy meals, and genetic susceptibility are thought to be major contributing factors.

In Madhumeha, the digestive fire (Agni) weakens, resulting in incorrect metabolism and the accumulation of toxins (Ama), disrupting normal tissue function. As the disease advances, it affects several physiological systems, including the nerves, kidneys, eyes, and cardiovascular system. Gudmar, Karela, Neem, and Amla are popular herbs for managing blood sugar levels. Regular physical activity, stress management, and a balanced daily routine are critical for symptom management. Ayurvedic management, with persistent care, strives to naturally improve quality of life, prevent problems, and restore metabolism.
