Prameha (Urinary Disorders Including Diabetes)

Prameha is a broad Ayurvedicterm encompassing a group of urinary disorders characterized by abnormal quantity, quality, and frequency of urine. It is primarily associated with metabolic dysfunction and is often correlated with diabetes mellitus in modern medicine. According to Ayurveda, Prameha arises due to imbalance of Kapha dosha, along with involvement of Meda (fat tissue), Mamsa (muscle tissue), and Kleda (body fluids). Sedentary lifestyle, excessive intake of sweet, heavy, and unctuous foods, and lack of physical activity are major causative factors.

Symptoms include frequent urination, turbid or oily urine, excessive thirst, fatigue, and heaviness in the body. In advanced stages, complications like weight loss, neuropathy, and delayed wound healing may occur. Ayurveda classifies Prameha into 20 types, with Madhumeha being the most severe and comparable to diabetes.

Management focuses on correcting metabolic imbalance through dietary regulation, herbal formulations, detoxification (Panchakarma), and lifestyle modifications. Herbs like Gudmar, Neem, and Turmeric are commonly used for their glucose-regulating and detoxifying properties. Regular exercise, weight control, and stress management are essential for effective management and prevention of complications.
