Udara Roga (Abdominal
Disorders) in Ayurveda refers to a group of diseases affecting the
abdomen due to imbalance of doshas—primarily Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—along
with impairment of digestive fire (Agni). These disorders involve the
accumulation of Ama (toxins), fluid, or gases in the abdominal region,
leading to distension and discomfort. Causes include improper diet, overeating,
consumption of incompatible foods, chronic indigestion, liver dysfunction,
and sedentary habits.
Udara Roga
encompasses various conditions such as ascites (Jalodara), enlargement of abdominalorgans, intestinal obstruction, and chronic digestive disturbances. Common
symptoms include abdominal swelling, pain, heaviness, indigestion, irregular
bowel movements, loss of appetite, weakness, and breathlessness in advanced
cases. The condition may gradually worsen if not treated timely.
Ayurvedic management
focuses on correcting Agni, eliminating Ama, and balancing the aggravated
doshas. A light, easily digestible diet with warm foods is recommended,
while heavy, oily, and incompatible foods should be avoided. Herbal
remedies like Punarnava, Triphala, Haritaki, and Pippali are used for
their detoxifying, digestive, and diuretic properties. Therapies such as Panchakarma,
especially Virechana and Basti, may be advised in chronic conditions.
Lifestyle modifications, regular physical activity, and proper dietary
discipline are essential for effective management and prevention of recurrence.
