Kapha Dosha Disorders (Kapha Vyadhi)

Kapha Dosha Disorders (Kapha Vyadhi) refer to a group of conditions caused by the imbalance or aggravation of Kapha dosha in Ayurveda. Kapha is responsible for structure, stability, lubrication, and immunity in the body. When Kapha becomes excessive due to factors like overeating, sedentary lifestyle, excessive sleep, and consumption of heavy, oily, sweet, or cold foods, it leads to sluggish metabolism and accumulation of mucus and toxins (Ama).

Common manifestations of Kapha Vyadhi include weight gain, lethargy, slow digestion, loss of appetite, cold and cough, respiratory congestion, edema, and excessive sleepiness. Individuals may also experience mental dullness, lack of motivation, and a feeling of heaviness in the body. Chronic Kapha imbalance can contribute to conditions like obesity, diabetes, sinusitis, and bronchial disorders.

Ayurvedic management aims to balance Kapha by stimulating digestion and enhancing metabolism. A light, warm, and dry diet is recommended, including foods that are pungent, bitter, and astringent in taste. Regular exercise, fasting (when appropriate), and maintaining an active lifestyle are essential. Herbs like Trikatu, Ginger, and Tulsi are commonly used for their digestive and expectorant properties. Avoiding heavy, oily, and cold foods along with proper daily routines helps restore balance and improve overall health.
