Gridhrasi (Sciatica)

Gridhrasi is an Ayurvedic condition categorized under Vata Vyadhi, commonly correlated with sciatica. It is primarily caused by the aggravation of Vata dosha, sometimes associated with Kapha, leading to obstruction in the nerve pathways. The term “Gridhrasi” is derived from the patient’s gait resembling that of a vulture due to severe pain and stiffness.

The condition mainly affects the sciatic nerve, causing radiating pain from the lower back to the buttocks, thighs, and legs. Common causes include prolonged sitting, poor posture, heavy lifting, spinal disc issues, and lack of physical activity. These factors disturb Vata, resulting in dryness and nerve irritation.

Symptoms of Gridhrasi include sharp, shooting pain, tingling sensation, numbness, muscle weakness, stiffness, and restricted movement. Pain typically worsens with movement, standing, or walking.

Ayurvedic management focuses on balancing Vata and relieving nerve compression. Therapies such as Abhyanga (medicated oil massage), Swedana (steam therapy), and Basti (medicated enema) are highly effective. Herbal formulations like Yograj Guggulu, Dashmool, and Eranda (castor oil) help reduce inflammation and pain.

A warm, Vata-pacifying diet, along with yoga, stretching exercises, and proper posture correction, is essential. Early Ayurvedic intervention can significantly relieve symptoms and improve mobility.
