Pakshaghata (Paralysis)

Pakshaghata, described in Ayurveda as a major Vata Vyadhi, refers to paralysis affecting one side or specific parts of the body. It occurs due to aggravated Vata dosha disrupting the normal functioning of nerves and muscles, leading to loss of movement, strength, and coordination.

The condition is often correlated with neurological disorders such as stroke, nerve damage, or trauma. Causes include excessive dryness in the body, poor circulation, mental stress, improper diet, aging, and obstruction in bodily channels (Srotas). These factors disturb Vata, impairing motor and sensory functions.

Common symptoms of Pakshaghata include weakness or immobility of limbs, facial deviation, difficulty in speaking, numbness, tremors, and loss of muscle control.

Ayurvedic management aims to restore Vata balance and improve nerve function. Treatments include Panchakarma therapies like Abhyanga (oil massage), Swedana (steam therapy), and Basti (medicated enema). Herbal formulations such as Ashwagandha, Bala, and Rasna are used to strengthen nerves and muscles.

A nourishing diet with warm, unctuous foods and a disciplined lifestyle with gentle physiotherapy, yoga, and meditation are recommended. Early intervention and consistent Ayurvedic care can significantly aid recovery and improve quality of life.
