Miscellaneous surgical illnesses include a wide range of acute and elective disorders that need surgery. They often show up in different ways in general surgery practices.
Some Examples
These include abscesses (such as peritonsillar or psoas), skin and soft tissue infections like cellulitis that need debridement, mild trauma lacerations, pilonidal cysts, anal fissures or fistulas, and sebaceous cysts. Less common ones include taking out foreign bodies, doing biopsies on swollen lymph nodes, or doing exploratory procedures on unexplained stomach pain.
How it looks and how to tell what it is
Patients usually say they have pain, swelling, fever, or discharge in one area. If the illness is not treated, systemic indications like sepsis may show up. Evaluation uses a clinical exam, ultrasound, or CT scan to confirm pus collections or structural problems and decide whether to do an incision/drainage or an excision.
Ways to Manage
For abscesses, treatment focuses on drainage (incision, irrigation, and packing), medications to prevent infection, and excision for lesions that keep coming back, like pilonidal disease. Laparoscopic tools make surgery less intrusive, and after surgery, care focuses on keeping the wound clean and following up to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Complications and Outlook
If you wait too long to get care, you could get cellulitis (a skin infection), bacteraemia (bacteria in the bloodstream), or a fistula (an abnormal connection between organs). Most of them go away completely with surgery done on time, but people with diabetes or a weak immune system are more likely to get sick.
