An anal fistula is an unusual tunnel that arises between the skin near the anus and the inner lining of the anal canal. It frequently happens after an anal abscess that didn't heal fully. When an infection happens, pus builds up. When the abscess drains, it may leave behind a path that connects the anal canal to the skin surface. This condition is often linked to long-term infections, inflammation, or diseases like Crohn's disease. ????
Some of the most common symptoms are constant pain, swelling, pus or bad-smelling discharge near the anus, skin irritation, and agony when sitting or going to the toilet. Some people may also have abscesses that come back and a fever. A doctor will look at you and may need to do an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or ultrasound (a test that uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body) to find the fistula tract and how far it goes.
Surgery is the best and most common treatment for anal fistulas, which rarely heal on their own. Fistulotomy, laser treatment, or seton placement are all procedures that can help get rid of the tract, stop it from coming back, and keep the sphincter working. Getting the right treatment early on makes sure that you heal completely, avoids problems, and brings back your normal comfort and quality of life.
