Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen and inflammatory veins in the lower rectum and anus. Chronic constipation, sitting for long periods of time, pregnancy, obesity, or a low-fibre diet can all cause the rectal veins to become more pressurised. Haemorrhoids can be internal (in the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus). Bleeding from the rectum during bowel movements, soreness, itching, swelling, inflammation, and discomfort around the anal area are all common signs. Internal haemorrhoids normally make you bleed without pain, whereas external haemorrhoids might make you hurt and bulge. In advanced situations, piles may prolapse (stick out of the anus), which can be quite painful. Early diagnosis helps save symptoms from getting worse and other problems from happening.
The severity of the condition determines the treatment. A high-fibre diet, drinking more fluids, taking medications, and making adjustments to your lifestyle can help with mild cases. Moderate cases can be treated with minimally invasive methods such as rubber band ligation, laser therapy, or sclerotherapy. If piles are really bad or keep coming back, surgery may be needed to remove them (haemorrhoidectomy). Most patients get great relief and a better quality of life with the right therapy and preventative steps.
