Miscarriage / Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Miscarriage, or pregnancy loss before 20 weeks, is common and often occurs due to chromosomal abnormalities in the developing embryo. Recurrent pregnancy loss refers to two or more consecutive miscarriages and may be linked to genetic factors, uterine abnormalities, hormonal issues, blood-clotting disorders, or uncontrolled medical conditions.?

Typical signs include vaginal bleeding, cramping, and passage of tissue, although some losses are diagnosed incidentally on ultrasound. Management options depend on the clinical situation and may include expectant (natural) management, medication to help pass remaining tissue, or minor surgical procedures such as suction dilation and curettage to empty the uterus safely.?

After a miscarriage, evaluation for recurrent loss may involve blood tests, imaging of the uterus, and sometimes genetic testing of the couple or pregnancy tissue to identify treatable causes. Emotional impact is significant, so counselling and psychological support are important aspects of care, alongside guidance on when it is safe to try conceiving again.?
