Vaginismus is a sexual pain disorder in which the vaginal and pelvic floor muscles tighten involuntarily during attempted penetration, making intercourse, tampon use, or pelvic exams painful or sometimes impossible. It may be primary (present from first attempts at penetration) or secondary (developing after a period of pain-free penetration, childbirth, surgery, or trauma).
Although often linked with anxiety, fear of pain, or past sexual or physical trauma, sometimes no clear cause is found. Treatment focuses on reducing muscle spasm and fear through education, pelvic floor physiotherapy, progressive vaginal dilators, and psychological or sex therapy; most people improve significantly with a structured, supportive approach.?
