Dyspareunia (Painful Intercourse)

Dyspareunia is the medical term for discomfort that happens during sex and doesn't go away. It can happen to women of all ages. This disorder can have a big effect on how you feel emotionally, on your close relationships, and on your general quality of life. The discomfort might happen near the opening of the vagina, deeper inside the pelvis, or all over the pelvic area. There are several possible causes, such as vaginal infections, dryness, hormonal fluctuations, endometriosis, pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary tract problems, or emotional disorders, including stress, anxiety, or past trauma.

Women who are going through perimenopause or menopause may also get dyspareunia since their vaginal tissues are getting thinner and they aren't producing as much natural lubrication. To find out what's wrong, doctors need a full medical history, a pelvic exam, and occasionally imaging tests. The treatment depends on what caused the problem. Options include lubricants, topical oestrogen creams, treating infections, pelvic floor physiotherapy, or counselling for psychosexual issues. Introducing changes to your lifestyle, having enough foreplay, and being open with your spouse can also make sex more comfortable. It is important to treat dyspareunia early to avoid long-term physical and emotional pain. Most women feel a lot better and restore their confidence in their sexual health after getting the right diagnosis and therapy.
