Orgasmic Disorder is characterized by a consistent or recurrent problem achieving sexual climax, even when a person feels aroused and receives sufficient physical and emotional stimulation. Individuals may take much longer than desired to reach orgasm, have orgasms that feel weak or incomplete, or be unable to climax at all during intercourse, masturbation, or both. The condition can be lifelong (present since first sexual experiences) or acquired after previously normal orgasms, and may be generalized (occurs in all situations) or situational (occurs only with certain partners, positions, or contexts).?
Many physical, psychological, and relationship factors can contribute, including hormonal changes, chronic illnesses, pelvic or neurological conditions, medications such as some antidepressants, anxiety, depression, performance pressure, low self-esteem, and unresolved conflicts with a partner. Diagnosis involves a detailed medical and sexual history, review of medications, assessment of mental health, and evaluation of how long the symptoms have persisted and how distressing they are. Management is tailored and may include education about normal sexual response, improving communication with a partner, sex therapy, addressing anxiety or mood disorders, adjusting contributing medications, pelvic floor or sensate-focus exercises, and in some cases targeted medical treatment.?
