Nabothian cysts, also known as mucinous retention cysts, are harmless growths that develop on the surface of the cervix. They occur when the mucus-producing glands in the cervix become blocked, trapping mucus inside and forming a small, smooth, dome-shaped bump. These cysts are quite common in women of reproductive age and are often discovered incidentally during routine pelvic examinations or Pap smears.
Most nabothian cysts are small, ranging from a few millimeters to about a centimeter in diameter, and usually appear white or yellowish in color. They are non-cancerous and do not cause symptoms in most cases. However, if a cyst grows larger, it may occasionally cause mild discomfort, a feeling of pressure, or be mistaken for other cervical lesions.
Diagnosis is typically confirmed through pelvic examination or imaging tests like ultrasound. Treatment is not usually necessary unless the cyst becomes unusually large or symptomatic. In such cases, a simple outpatient procedure can drain or remove the cyst. Maintaining good cervical health through regular gynecological check-ups ensures that any abnormal findings are identified early, distinguishing benign conditions like nabothian cysts from more serious cervical disorders.
