Cervical stenosis is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck (cervical spine), which can compress the spinal cord and nerve roots. This narrowing is often due to age-related degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis, disc herniation, thickening of ligaments, and formation of bone spurs. Other causes may include trauma, congenital abnormalities, or inflammatory diseases.
Symptoms can vary widely but commonly include neck pain, numbness, tingling, weakness in the arms, hands, or upper body, reduced coordination, and in severe cases, problems with bladder or bowel control. Some patients may also experience Lhermitte's sign—a shock-like sensation down the spine when bending the neck. The progression of symptoms can be slow and may worsen with neck movement or prolonged standing.
Treatment depends on severity. Mild cases often respond well to physical therapy, posture improvement, anti-inflammatory medications, and gentle exercise. Surgery may be necessary for severe cases to relieve spinal cord compression and prevent further neurological damage.
