Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) is a kind of blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow and affects white blood cells. Myeloid cells proliferate out of control, which causes the blood to have more aberrant white blood cells. Compared to acute types of leukaemia, CML grows slowly and usually starts in adults.
The Philadelphia chromosome is a genetic change that causes the disease. It makes a protein that is not normal called BCR-ABL. This protein makes cells divide too much, which leads to leukaemia. You might feel worn out, have night sweats, lose weight, have a fever, have an enlarged spleen, and be sick a lot. Some individuals, meanwhile, may not notice symptoms in the early stages.
Survival rates have gone up a lot thanks to new treatments. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and other targeted medicines have changed how CML is treated by blocking the BCR-ABL protein. Chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, or immunotherapy may be used in addition to other treatments, depending on the patient's condition.
Many people with CML can live long, happy lives if they get diagnosed early, keep an eye on their health, and stick to their therapy. Ongoing medical advances give us hope for better results and possible treatments.
