Melanoma

Melanoma is a very aggressive type of skin cancer that starts in melanocytes, which are the cells that make colour in the skin. Melanoma spreads quickly if not found early. It usually looks like a new mole or alterations to an old one, including borders that aren't straight, colour changes, or a bigger size.

Some of the most important risk factors are too much sun exposure, using tanning beds, having light skin, a family history of melanoma, and a weak immune system. Dermatologists look for probable melanomas by using the ABCDE rule: asymmetry, border irregularity, colour fluctuation, a diameter larger than 6 mm, and the evolving nature of moles.

The stage of the disease will determine the best treatment, which could be surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, or chemotherapy. Using sunscreen regularly, wearing protective clothing, staying out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, and getting regular skin check-ups are all ways to protect yourself.
