Onychomycosis

Onychomycosis, sometimes referred to as fungal nail infection, is a widespread ailment impacting the nail unit, predominantly induced by dermatophytes like Trichophyton rubrum. It can affect both toenails and fingernails, but toenail infections are more prevalent. The infection causes the nails to change colour, thicken, become brittle, and occasionally even separate from the nail beds. Other fungi, such as yeasts (Candida species) and non-dermatophyte moulds, can also cause onychomycosis, especially in individuals with weak immune systems.

The illness spreads when people come into touch with fungi, which is common in warm, wet places. Older age, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, repetitive nail trauma, and immunosuppression are all things that can make you more likely to get sick. Onychomycosis can worsen toenail infections, leading to pain, discomfort, and difficulty walking.

Diagnosis involves a clinical examination and laboratory testing like microscopy and fungal culture. There are many ways to treat this, from topical antifungals to systemic oral drugs like terbinafine, which works quite well but needs to be watched for side effects. Recurrence is common; therefore, it's crucial to keep your feet clean and avoid being infected again by taking care of your shoes.
Getting diagnosed and treated early improves results and lowers the risk of problems that come with fungal nail infections.
