Holding in urine
Holding onto urine
Urinary retention is a urological illness characterised by the inability to fully evacuate the bladder. It occurs either abruptly (acute) or progressively (chronic). It happens because of a blockage, nerve problems, or weak bladder muscles. Men's enlarged prostate, urethral strictures, bladder stones, nerve-related diseases, and several drugs are also common causes.
Some common symptoms are trouble starting to urinate, weak urine flow, having to urinate a lot but only a little at a time, and always feeling like your bladder isn't emptying all the way. In extreme circumstances, acute urine retention can lead to painful urination difficulties, necessitating prompt medical attention.
A physical exam, bladder scans, ultrasounds, urine tests, and sometimes cystoscopy are all used to make a diagnosis. The origin of the problem will determine the treatment. It could include catheterisation, medicines to relax the bladder and prostate, or surgery if there is obstruction or prolonged retention.
If not addressed, urine retention can cause infections in the urinary system, damage to the bladder, and problems with the kidneys. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential for avoiding problems and enhancing quality of life.
