Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the name for dark spots that show up after skin damage or inflammation.
Dark patches may show up as the skin heals from an accident, acne, eczema, burns, or inflammation. People term this post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). This occurs when the skin produces an excess of melanin during the healing process. The colour of these dark patches can be anything from light brown to black, depending on the person's skin tone and how deep the melanin has settled.
People with medium to dark complexions are more likely to have PIH because their melanocytes are more active. These spots aren't dangerous, but they could remain for months or even years and make you feel less sure of yourself. To halt and treat discolouration, you need to protect yourself from the sun because it can make it worse.
Some of the therapies that can help lighten black spots are topical creams that contain hydroquinone, retinoids, arbutin, azelaic acid, and kojic acid. Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser therapy are some treatments that might help improve your skin tone. Always use sunscreen, wash your face gently, and don't pick or scrape your skin to keep problems from getting worse.
