Herpes Simplex / Zoster – Viral Infections Leading to Blisters or Shingles
Herpes simplex and herpes zoster are viral infections that affect the skin and nerves, often causing painful blisters, sores, or rashes. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) usually affects the mouth, lips, or genitals, leading to recurrent cold sores or genital herpes. It spreads through direct contact with infected skin, saliva, or sexual transmission. Outbreaks may flare up during stress, illness, or weakened immunity.
After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate later in life, especially in older adults or those with weakened immunity. Shingles typically appears as a painful, burning rash on one side of the body that may be accompanied by tingling, itching, or fever.
Treatment for both conditions usually involves antiviral medications that help reduce the severity, control symptoms, and shorten the duration of outbreaks. Early treatment is vital in shingles to prevent complications like postherpetic neuralgia (persistent nerve pain). Maintaining immunity, reducing stress, and practicing good hygiene can help prevent frequent recurrences of HSV and complications from herpes zoster.
