Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, commonly caused by infections and categorized as gonococcal or non-gonococcal. Gonococcal urethritis results from Neisseria gonorrhoeae, presenting with symptoms such as burning during urination, discharge, and irritation. Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), typically triggered by Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, or other organisms, shares similar symptoms but is not caused by gonorrhea. Men are more often symptomatic, with discomfort, itchiness, and sometimes discharge, whereas women may exhibit mild or no symptoms but can develop complications like pelvic inflammatory disease if untreated.
Treatment for both forms involves antibiotics, and it’s essential to treat sexual partners to prevent reinfection and complications. Early therapy reduces the risk of chronic symptoms, infertility, or severe complications like epididymo-orchitis or reactive arthritis.
